Anti-U. S.
Commenting upon a report that the U. S. plans to build ten river gunboats for service on the Yangtze River in
China, the whole Japanese press poured obloquy upon the head of the U.S.
The Chugai Shogyo suggested that Japan and Great Britain should follow America's example. The Hochi Nichi Nichi, Tomiuri all averred that the building of gunbobts was to establish, and presumably to defend, a Chino-American economic alliance. They charged that the boats in question would give the U. S. a preponderant naval strength in China and that the purpose is to "back up American mercantile efforts to outstrip Japanese and British interests."
