Jacques Schneider Trophy
Sleeked with sandpaper and rubbed down until not so much as a varnish blister marred its swift stream lines, a U. S. seaplane took off at the Bayshore aerodrome near Baltimore, slithered like a curving bullet round the seven laps of the 50 meter Schneider Trophy course. "Click!" went the timing instruments. Officials figured for a moment--announced that Lieut. Jame Doolittle had covered the course at an average speed of 232,573 miles per hour, which was 43,753 miles an hour faster than the previous (unofficial) world record for seaplanes set at Bayshore a year ago.
