A Flutter
Last week the anthracite coal strike in force since Sept. 1 continued in operation while the mines continued idle.
President John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers caused a flutter by announcing: "Whenever the representatives of the operators are willing to meet the representatives of the miners in amicable negotiations to work out a contract for from one to five years' continuous operation of the mines, the miners stand now, and have been, prepared to meet them."
But nothing came of it. The operators called a meeting but announced nothing.
The miners have set their hearts on a pay increase. The operators have determined there shall not be one. Until one side or the other weakens, what use negotiating?
