The band played "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." He, pleased, mounted the stage, took the conductor's baton, led the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in the last number of the program. He was William Andrews Clark Jr., guarantor of the orchestra. He had just pledged financial backing (lacking which the orchestra was about to disband) for another five years.
