"Mother of War"
Pomp & circumstance attended the stately funeral at Belgrade last week of a woman much honored and beloved, Mme Tankositch, "Mother of the War."
To Serbia the War brought glory, victory, expansion to five times her former size and a new name, "Jugoslavia."
Even mere relatives of men who helped to start the world slaughter are beloved by Belgrade. "Mother" Tankositch was mother of the great hero Major Voja Tankositch. He, as every child in Jugoslavia knows, instructed in the use of firearms and in the art of assassination Gavrillo Princip.
Princip, as everyone knows, assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary and also his wife, thus providing occasion for the War.
In Serajevo last year Jugoslav patriots unveiled a tablet honoring Patriot Princip on the scene of his crime (TIME, Feb. 3 & 17, 1930). Gallant Major Tankositch fell in battle during the Serbian retreat from Belgrade in 1915.
