"Speed"

Charles W. ("Speed") Holman, famed speed and stunt pilot, winner of many an air derby, flew into Omaha for the air races last week. He voluntered to "put on a few stunts" to enliven the afternoon's program. After taking much of the crowd's breath with routine acrobatics, he put his fast Laird biplane into a 2,000-ft. power dive, rolling it over on its back. As plane & pilot flashed low over the grandstands, spectators saw Holman hanging head down by a precarious knee-hold, clutching desperately for the controls. He did not reach them. The plane rocketed to the ground with a screeching smash, bowled over & over, came to rest 150 ft. away. Pilot Holman was obliterated.
