The Crown

P:Millions of loyal subjects listening by radio while King George opened "Queens-way," world's largest underwater tunnel at Liverpool, could scarcely hear the royal words because of a thundering airplane advertising Crawford's Cream Crackers overhead. Last week Their Majesties had the satisfaction of knowing that $25,000 has been paid to expiate this lese-majeste. To Liverpool papers William Crawford & Sons, Ltd. sent under no compulsion, except the mighty smash of public opinion, the following abject letter:

"We cannot adequately express our feelings of profoundest regret at the deplorable occurrence, when an aeroplane bearing our advertisement most unexpectedly appeared during the ceremony on the occasion of the opening of the Tunnel by Their Majesties the King and Queen. We implicitly believe that every precaution had been taken to prevent such an occurrence. In a letter to the proprietors of the plane we stated: In the first place we desire to make it very clear that we do not wish the plane to be overhead at any time throughout the King's program. But we accept full responsibility for the miscarriage of our plans, resulting in an incident which detracted from a ceremony so impressive and so important. We desire to tender to the Lord Mayor and the civic authorities, and to every one concerned, our sincere apology for an occurrence which was entirely unpremeditated and unforeseen, and in some measure to atone for it we shall ask the Lord Mayor's acceptance of a cheque for -L-5,000 for the benefit of Liverpool charities."

P:Eskimo is not one of the languages written by King George but he lately signed a message in Eskimo to his Innuit subjects in the Hudson Bay country. Last week the message was released as Governor Patrick Ashley Cooper of Hudson's Bay Co. was on a 10,000-mile tour of trading posts in the remote North. Text:

"The Queen and I send our loyal Innuit subjects a message of greeting from our home in the great encampment of London. In every part of the Empire, be it ever so many sleeps from our encampment, the happiness of our subjects deeply affects the personal happiness of the Queen and myself. In the same way as parents are proud of their children, the Queen and I take especial pride in our faithful and hardy Innuit."

P:Aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia which won a 41-mile handicap race at Cowes last week, Their Majesties lunched H. R. H. Frederick, youngest son of one-time German Crown Prince Wilhelm.
