Fifth

In Manhattan last week arrived 30 young Mormon missionaries, bound for Europe where they will hand out tracts, hold street meetings, preach in Mormon chapels. Before they set sail a newshawk went to the Hotel McAlpin for an interview, got a bellhop to page "Mr. Brigham

Young." To the reporter's vast surprise, up stepped a handsome young man who said: "I'm Brigham Young Fifth."

The original Brigham Young had 19 wives; Brigham Young Jr. had eight. By the time the third Brigham, who had only one wife, grew up, there were so many Brigham Youngs in other branches of the family that he took the middle name of Spencer. Today Mormon officials estimate there are perhaps 15,000 descendants of the original Brigham Young.

Though Missionary Brigham Spencer Young has always been called "Spence" and has never been known in Salt Lake City as "Fifth," his claim to the title was thoroughly justified. His grandfather, the first Brigham Spencer Young, is, at 77, a Salt Lake City court bailiff. His father, B. Spencer Young, is an employe of HOLC. Brigham V, popular but not too pious, accepted his mission call with good grace. While the other missionaries were holding a religious meeting in a Manhattan street last week, he confessed: "I didn't go. Another fellow and I went over to the Hollywood Restaurant instead. I thought it was swell."

Remarking that his Church's prohibition of tobacco, alcohol, tea and coffee is only ''advisory." Mormon Young said: "I've been on binges, of course, and smoked and done things like that, but that doesn't mean damnation for me."
