j-to-i Truth
Up for renomination in West Virginia's primary last week was Democratic Senator Matthew Mansfield Neely. West Virginia's other Democratic Senator. 30-year-old Rush Dew Holt, has made many a bitter charge that Senator Neely was using WPA jobs to build up a great political machine (TIME, March 23). To get even with his senior colleague for hogging WPA patronage, Senator Holt backed Ralph M. Hiner, onetime Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates, for the nomination. Rush D. Holt won only the moral victory of having told the truth about the strength of the Neely machine which swamped Candidate Hiner more than 3-to-1.
