Prouder Beauties

In Nazi ideology the paternal State watches over the acts, minds, morals and even the manners of its children. So last week self-confident young Baldur von Schirach--who although only 30 is generally rated high in the Nazi Party as head of the Hitler Youth organization--looked on Germany's marriageable daughters and decided something should be done to make them more attractive. For the blue-skirted, white-bloused young Maedchen who have stomped past him at innumerable parades, he decreed beauty culture.

Henceforth, all German girls between 18 and 21 must be members of a league whose name is "Work, Beauty & Faith," whose object is the beautification of women by such proper Aryan measures as physical culture and rhythmic dancing --not however by the use of lipsticks and other cosmetics which are vicious foreign importations.

"At this period," said Leader von Schirach, "the care of the body and elegance are educational necessities for feminine youth. The more beautiful German girls become, the prouder and more self-confident they will be."

Just as concerned over the private manners of his followers is Nazi Constantin Hierl, leader of the semimilitary Labor Service. His official paper, Der Arbeits-mann, recently stated:

"It is a mistake to believe that clicking the heels is the only proper deportment or that the man begins with the manual of arms. The well-known rough but hearty tone is not everywhere in place, especially in the company of women. There is no reason to feel that one is at all times in high boots, even when one is wearing laced shoes."
