"The Manse"
Three days after Christmas, 1856, Rev. Joseph Ruggles Wilson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Staunton, Va. was blessed by the birth of a son. He christened the child Thomas Woodrow (for its maternal grandfather) Wilson. Soon after, Pastor Wilson & wife moved away from Staunton. Their dwelling, called "The Manse," now belongs to Mary Baldwin College (for women). Last week Mrs. Cordell Hull, Senators Carter Glass and Harry Byrd, Jesse H. Jones, Norman Hezekiah Davis, President John Lloyd Newcomb of the University of Virginia, Frank L. Polk, U. S. Steel Chairman Edward R. Stettinius Jr. and other Wilson-boosters incorporated as Woodrow Wilson Birthplace Foundation, Inc. announced they would buy "The Manse" for $25,000, as a national shrine.
