Lettie Weller's Acres
Showing how little he cared for any U. S. property rights, President Lazaro Cardenas last week grabbed 7,230 acres, more than eleven square miles, of pasturage in the State of Coahuila, owned by a San Antonian, Mrs. Lettie W. Weller. He split it into 59 farms for 59 Negro families. The ancestors of these Negroes reputedly went to Mexico in the 1860s as slaves of a band of Kickapoo Indians who trekked across the border from the U. S.
Last week the Mexican Government, which has been shipping expropriated oil to Nazi Germany on a barter trade basis, agreed to take more than $2,500,000 worth of German oil refinery equipment in exchange.
