"My Dear Children"

Nobody was surprised, but a lot of people were pained, when last week Jimmy Roosevelt filed suit for divorce. President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt had no comment to make. Jimmy was their eldest, but it was well known that they both highly esteemed Mrs. Jimmy (Betsey Gushing).* The Jimmy Roosevelts had been married ten years, and there were two children.

Joined to Jimmy's name for many a month had been the name of pretty, 24-year-old Romelle Theresa Schneider, trained nurse who attended him at the Mayo Clinic when he underwent an operation in 1938. There was no immediate prospect of his remarriage. It will be a year before his divorce, filed in California, is complete.

Jimmy's action last week will bring to a total of five the President's grandchildren who are children of divorce: 13-year-old Sistie and g-year-old Buzzie Dall; 7-year-old William (son of Elliott); and finally Kate, 4, and Sara, 8, who will remain in the custody of their mother, Betsey Gushing.

Marital record of the other Roosevelt children:

Anna, married to Curtis Dall, 1926; divorced, 1934; married to John Boettiger, 1935

Elliott, married to Elizabeth Donner, 1932; divorced, 1933; married to Ruth Googins, 1933.

The marriages of Franklin D. Jr. (to Ethel du Pont, 1938), and John (to Anne Clark, 1938) are still intact.
