England today gets about as much good music as a besieged isle can expect: daily concerts in the basement of London's National Gallery; sporadic performances by the leading British symphonies; no opera. Occupied France still has the Paris Opera--with German troupes reported playing there. In Italy, there has been much the same opera as ever. Germany, although many of her greatest musicians left her after Hitler came into power, nevertheless provides more music now than any other nation in Europe. Its musical state last week:
