Brasher's Birds Bought
The State of Connecticut, which for seven years has admired the paintings of its celebrated bird painter, white-haired, leathery Reginald ("Rex") Brasher (TIME, Jan. 31, 1938), last week turned its words into deeds. At the suggestion of the Waterbury Republican's and American's William J. Pope, the State Legislature passed an appropriation of $74,290 to buy Brasher's collection of North American bird portraits--bigger, if not better than that of the late, great John James Fougere Audubon. Connecticut had, as yet, no museum to put them in, couldn't see its way to building one until the present munitions boom was over. Casting about for likely storage space, the State last week had received offers from the State Library, Hartford's Avery Memorial, Middletown's Wesleyan University, Yale's Peabody Museum.
