Four-Fifths of a Nation

What are the card-playing habits of U.S. citizens? That was what the Association of American Playing Card Manufacturers wanted to know more about. So they hired New York's J. Walter Thompson advertising agency (Lux, Kraft Cheese, Chase & Sanborn) to investigate. Last week J. Walter Thompson Co. put into circulation a little red booklet revealing the results of its door-to-door survey:

> Next to reading, going to the movies and listening to the radio, card games are the most popular form of recreation in the U.S.

> More than four-fifths of U.S. families--83%--play cards.

> Cards are found in 87% of U.S. homes. Most of the 4% who own but do not play cards keep them on hand for "company."

> Most widely known card game is rummy. Of all families interviewed, 49% play rummy, 45% solitaire, 44% contract bridge.

> Although rummy and solitaire are slightly better known, bridge is played most often. Among both auction and contract players questioned, 41% play once a week or oftener, another 16% play once a fortnight.

> Other favorites: poker (37%), pinochle (33%), hearts (30%), five hundred (22%).

>Among children, adult games like contract, auction and pinochle are nearly as popular as pig, pounce and old maid.
