Snuff, Cigars, Cigarets

Once again war is booming the tobacco business.

Even snuff hit a 20th-century high with January-April output at 15,070,000 lb., 13% above last year. Reasons: strict no-smoking rules in war plants and much higher incomes in the snuff-dipping Deep South.

Thanks to fatter pay envelopes, cigar sales are also higher. The highest-priced cigars--25-c- each & up--soared a titanic 64% above 1941. Nickel stogie sales rose only 2.2%.

None of these increases has hurt cigaret sales. Largely because most soldiers and sailors are walking smokestacks, April cigaret production jumped 10% to 17 billion, highest ever and the 17th consecutive monthly gain.
