Fruits of Appeasement
While antiFascists howled, the U.S. Government has for months allowed appeasing dribbles of oil, textiles, essential drugs (plus a few luxury goods for down-at-the-heel big shots) to be shipped to Spain. In return Spain has shipped to the U.S. tons of her own strategic produce --mercury, tungsten, cork and hides.
Last week the further fruits of U.S. appeasement became apparent. The American Chamber of Commerce in Spain announced that the U.S. has imported so much more from Spain than Spain has been able to buy from the U.S. that Madrid banks are now choked with dollars with no place to go. Result, according to the Chamber: Spain is about to unfreeze some $11 million to pay off U.S. exporters whose claims go back to the years before Francisco Franco won his Civil War.
