Praise from Herr Hubert
German officialdom paid a reluctant but handsome compliment to U.S. tanks last week, and incidentally pried the lid off a hush-hush American development--a gyrostabilizer mount to keep the tank gun aiming steadily. Reporting a display of captured Allied materiel, the Nazi news agency D.N.B. said:
"In the East and in Africa we captured numerous U.S. tanks. The latest types have considerable fighting power. Their gun turrets, which can be rotated all the way around, are operated by electricity or by hydraulic power, and some of them need only 15 seconds for a full turn.
"Of great interest is the attempt to stabilize the direction of gunfire by using the gyroscope system to enable a tank to continue firing when moving, undisturbed by concussions and the unevenness of the ground.
"The best-known type is the 30-ton General Sherman tank which is heavily armored and strongly armed, which without reservation must be described as 'good.' "
D.N.B. also conceded that Britain and Russia were developing tanks "along the right lines," but hastened to add lyrical praise for the "impregnable" German "Tiger" tanks (which Allied experts consider clumsy). Of the new American tank destroyers, with their 105-mm. and three-inch high-velocity guns, D.N.B. said not a word.
