Crisis Ahead
The next big domestic crisis will probably be in manpower. Hints of trouble to come are already turning up here & there, especially in the West Coast aviation industry. Flying Fortress production is lagging because the Boeing Aircraft plants at Seattle need 9,000 new workers at once (see p. 79).
Thanks to hasty patching by Paul McNutt's War Manpower Commission and aggressive hiring campaigns by industry, the manpower shortage has been off the front pages for months. But in the next year WMC estimates that the U.S. will need 2,000,000 more soldiers & sailors, 1,600,000 more workers in war plants, Government and food processing.
