Not by Bread Alone
Under Naziism, the soul of Germany all but died. Under the occupation, its failing spark has yet to be blown again into flame. Lest it go out altogether, the Rev. Geoffrey P. Druitt, British Assistant Chaplain General, last week delivered a message, almost a prayer, to the British forces in Germany:
"For more than a year the German people, living in squalor and rubble in their ruined cities, have faced nothingness. . . . We shrug our shoulders and say, 'They asked for it,' we are doing all we can to feed the bodies of this people.
"We have done nothing for the souls of Germany. . . . Mentally, morally and spiritually . . . the Germans must be helped to see something worthwhile ahead. If not, they will go bad. . . .
"The German people, led and encouraged into a true Christian way, with the German churches built again into the fiber and framework of Christendom, could make its good contribution to Europe and the world. . . . But we are waiting too long.
"Today, the problem of Germany is our problem, the weakness of Germany our weakness, the sin of Germany our sin, and the future of Germany our future. We must call a halt to this landslide to a low level of Godless living . . . we must leave the worship of false gods."
