Love One Another

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another . . .

--John 13:34

The Methodist Council of Bishops, meeting 40-strong near Los Angeles last week, discovered a familiar mote in the eye of their Roman Catholic brethren. "The Roman Catholic Church," they declared in a committee report adopted by the council, "should cease to misinform the American people by affirmations of loyalty to democratic ideals when deliberately denying religious freedom wherever it has power to do so."

Also in Los Angeles, the Rev. W. O. H. Garman, secretary of the strictly Fundamentalist American Council of Christian Churches, fired another short round of bird shot in his little organization's long standing feud with the mighty Federal Council of Churches.* Angry Parson Garman did not approve one bit of the Federal Council's national Conference on the Church and Economic Life, held last February at Pittsburgh (TIME, March 3). Cried he:

"That conference was one of the most subtle, insidious, satanic attacks ever made on our economy, the American way of life and certain aspects of our faith. It had every indication of being intended to prepare the mind of the Protestant Church for the near-Communism which the Federal Council [of Churches] and its C.I.O. and A.F.L. fellow travelers expect to force upon this nation."

* The American Council claims about 1,000,000 members. Federal Council membership: 27,500,000-odd.
