Promise & Answer
A new antibiotic and an old one made medical news last week:
P:Announcing the isolation of viomycin (named for the violet color of the Cuban soil mold in which it was found), Chas. Pfizer & Co. of Brooklyn reported that it had already shown promise in treating tuberculous mice and guinea pigs. Tests on humans are just beginning. Viomycin seems to work against tubercle bacilli which are resistant to streptomycin.
P:The Army Medical Department reported that aureomycin might be an answer to the dreaded aftermath of atomic blasts--radiation sickness. Dogs were exposed to deadly doses of radiation all over the body. Untreated, 80% died; of those treated with aureomycin within an hour after exposure, 80% lived.
