Birthday in Paris
Europe's most venerable U.S. newspaper observed its 75th anniversary in Paris last week--appropriately enough, at a special performance of the Comedie Franc, aise, the world's oldest theatrical troupe.
Since its establishment by the late James Gordon Bennett, the European edition of the New York Herald Tribune has become an Old World institution almost as familiar as the Alps, and somewhat more far-ranging. Nearly 47,000 copies flow daily to 31 countries, not only in Europe but throughout Africa and the Far East.
There are even 150 subscribers in the U.S.
For the first time in its long life, however, the Paris Herald now faces a serious challenger. In 1960 the New York Times moved its puny international edition from Amsterdam to Paris, freshened its news coverage with direct teletype transmission from New York, now claims an overseas circulation of 35,000--up by 26,000 since the shift.
