Sullivan's Retreat
Alas, the Rev. Leon Sullivan, who formulated a set of antiapartheid guidelines that would justify U.S. companies' remaining in South Africa, has submitted to the pressures of the Randall Robinsons, Jesse Jacksons and Andrew Youngs of this world. As a dedicated and active supporter of the principles Sullivan set up, I personally feel cheated and let down by his announcement ((WORLD, June 15)) that all U.S. firms should leave South Africa.
Now more than ever, Sullivan's original view that U.S. firms were justified in remaining requires his full commitment to break up the evil apartheid system. Indignation at apartheid is respected, justified and necessary, but putting a two-year time limit on courses of action was unrealistic. Please reverse your decision, Reverend Sullivan; we still need your support.
