Driving Mr. President
By Sidney Urquhart
You could call him the John Sununu of Poland. He's a college dropout and part- time taxi driver who followed LECH WALESA out of the Gdansk shipyards to become his personal bodyguard and chauffeur. Today MIECZYSLAW WACHOWSKI is sitting pretty in Warsaw's Belvedere Palace running the President's private office. He apparently sees himself at the center of Walesa's inner circle of advisers, but his colleagues regard him as boorish, arrogant and power hungry. Like Woody Allen's Zelig, he has elbowed his way into so many official photo ops that local photographers delight in cropping him out of their prints.
