AS THE EARTH TURNS

Scientists at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory last week reported strong evidence that the Earth's inner core--a sphere about the size of the Moon--is spinning freely within the molten outer core.

--The inner core seems to be rotating slightly faster than the surface of the planet

--If its motion remains constant, the core will make one extra turn every 400 years
