MILESTONES
By KATHLEEN ADAMS, ELIZABETH L. BLAND, DANIEL EISENBERG, LISA GRANATSTEIN, ANITA HAMILTON, JANICE M. HOROWITZ, NADYA LABI, ELIZABETH RUDULPH AND ALAIN L. SANDERS
MARRIAGE REVEALED. Of CHRISTOPHER DARDEN, 41, O.J. Simpson prosecutor who transformed tearful defeat into bestsellerdom, and MARCIA (no, not that Marcia) CARTER, vice president of a TV entertainment company; in Vienna, Va.
RETIRING. DAVID BRINKLEY, 77, TV newsman of masterly aplomb and dryly trenchant wit; ending 54 years on the air.
JUSTICE DELAYED. For IRA EINHORN, 57, hippie guru and convicted murderer who was run to ground last June after a 16-year manhunt (TIME, Sept. 29, 1997); by a French appeals court, which said it would rule on the U.S.'s extradition request on Nov. 4; in Bordeaux, France.
DIED. KATHY KEETON GUCCIONE, 58, co-founder of Penthouse magazine, who campaigned for the testing of the experimental cancer drug hydrazine sulfate; of complications following surgery to remove scar tissue; in New York City. Keeton claimed the drug extended her life after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995.
DIED. ERNEST J. PARHAM, 93, witness to events leading up to the 1923 massacre of at least six African Americans in Rosewood, Fla. His 1994 testimony led the state legislature to compensate survivors. Parham remained silent for 71 years because "no one ever asked."
DIED. SCHOICHI YOKOI, 82, die-hard Japanese soldier who emerged from his jungle hideout on Guam 27 years after World War II ended; of heart failure; in Nagoya. When leaflets drifted down from U.S. planes announcing the war's end, Yokoi suspected foul play on the part of the Allies. Counting the years by the cycles of the moon and crafting clothing from tree-bark fibers, Yokoi honored his pledge never to surrender. Two hunters who stumbled upon him in 1972 passed on the news of Japan's defeat.
DIED. VISCOUNT TONY-PANDY, 88, silver-tongued Speaker of the British House of Commons from 1976 to 1983, whose Welsh-accented "Order! Order!" set the tone for parliamentary debate; in Cardiff, Wales.
