RECOVERING. STEPHEN KING, 51, horror novelist; from injuries sustained after he was hit by a van near his Lovell, Me., summer home; at a hospital in Lewiston. King underwent surgeries for leg and hip fractures and a collapsed lung.
MARRIED. RUPERT MURDOCH, 68, billionaire media magnate, to former employee WENDI DENG, 32; aboard his yacht in New York Harbor. It is Murdoch's third marriage.
SENTENCE BEGUN. CAPTAIN JOSEPH HAZELWOOD, 53, former skipper of the Exxon Valdez; after nine years of appeals; in Anchorage. In 1990 a jury convicted Hazelwood of negligently spilling 11 million gal. of oil into Prince William Sound. Hazelwood began his 1,000 hours of community service by picking up roadside junk and working in a soup kitchen.
OVERTURNED. The 1997 conviction of FIFE SYMINGTON, 53, former Governor of Arizona; for bank fraud; by a federal appeals court; in San Francisco. Symington never went to jail. The judge said a juror who believed in his innocence was wrongly dismissed during deliberations.
DIED. CECILIA DANIELI, 56, developer of compact steel mills, or mini-mills, that revolutionized the steel industry; of cancer; in Aviano, Italy. The so-called Iron Lady turned the Danieli Group into a hugely profitable international company.
DIED. FRED TRUMP, 93, entrepreneurial builder and father of mogul Donald Trump--who credits much of his success to his dad; in New Hyde Park, N.Y. The elder Trump began his career in the 1920s selling one-family homes, later moving on to lucrative New York City high rises.
DIED. CLIFTON FADIMAN, 95, impassioned essayist and critic dedicated to making intellectual works accessible; on Sanibel Island, Fla. Fadiman judged Book-of-the-Month Club selections for 50 years; moderated the '30s and '40s radio show Information Please; and edited more than 20 anthologies, including his beloved The World Treasury of Children's Literature.
