DIED. HAFEZ ASSAD, 69, President of Syria who held an iron grip on power for three decades; of heart failure; in Damascus (see World).

DIED. GEORGE SEGAL, 75, American Pop Art icon whose monochromatic sculptures were cast from live models and outfitted with bland commercial products; in South Brunswick, N.J. A so-called New Realist, he evoked the mystery and pathos of human existence in his tableaux.

DIED. JACOB LAWRENCE, 82, Modernist painter who broke the color barrier in the nation's art galleries and is known for his epic 60-painting series of rural blacks' northern migration around World War I; in Seattle.

DIED. ELLERY CHUN, 91, native Hawaiian who created the brightly colored aloha shirt in 1931; in Honolulu. The short-sleeved silk shirts, originally decorated with palm trees, pineapples and hula girls, were designed to drum up business during the Depression.
