BORN. To betrothed actors CATHERINE ZETA-JONES, 30, and MICHAEL DOUGLAS, 55: the couple's first child, Dylan Michael; in Los Angeles.
BORN. To chameleon chanteuse MADONNA, 41, and director GUY RITCHIE, 31: her second child, Rocco; reportedly by caesarean section; in Los Angeles.
RETIRED. JERRY WEST, 62, revered L.A. Lakers icon who netted seven NBA titles during his 40-year career as player and executive; in Los Angeles. Silhouetted in the NBA logo, the 14-time All-Star guard was nicknamed "Mr. Clutch" for his last-second heroics.
DIED. THOMAS FORAN, 76, chief prosecutor in the Chicago Seven conspiracy trial for riots at the 1968 D.N.C.; in Lake Forest, Ill. Foran won convictions against five of the accused protesters, but they never served time.
CONVICTED. ANWAR IBRAHIM, 53, Malaysia's deposed Deputy Prime Minister, arrested after challenging his mentor, Mahathir Mohamad, who has ruled for 19 years; of sodomy; and sentenced to nine years in prison; in Kuala Lumpur. Human-rights groups condemned the 14-month trial, in which prosecutors changed the date of the alleged crime twice after alibis were produced.
DIED. ALEC GUINNESS, 86, actor; in West Sussex, England (see Eulogy).
DIED. LORETTA YOUNG, 87, the loveliest of Hollywood movie queens of the 1930s and '40s, who appeared in 90 films opposite the likes of Clark Gable and Cary Grant; in Los Angeles. She won an Oscar for The Farmer's Daughter (1947) as a Swedish-American farm girl who becomes a Congresswoman. In 1953 she was host and star of TV's The Loretta Young Show, creating a trademark entrance in a glam gown at the start of each show. She won three Emmys for the dramatic series. Young, thrice married, all but retired from acting in 1963, devoting her energy to a cosmetics line and to Catholic charities, for which she received some derision. Marlene Dietrich said, "Every time she 'sins,' she builds a church. That's why there are so many Catholic churches in Hollywood."
