Abstract
Calcium fluoride, commonly called fluorspar or fluorite, is the principal fluoride-containing mineral. Whereas there are some domestic U.S. sources, much of the fluorspar used in the United States is imported. Fluorspar is marketed in several grades: metallurgical fluorspar sold as gravel, lump, or briquettes; ceramic-grade fluorspar; and acid-grade fluorspar. The latter is used in the open-hearth process for the production of steel as well as to produce hydrogen fluoride.
