Abstract
Cellulose ethers is the common terminology for a group of cellulose derivatives that are soluble in aqueous or organic media. They are additives in many formulations and function primarily to control solution rheology. This article surveys the chemistry, properties, and characterization methods common to cellulose ethers and their manufacture and provides general health and safety factors. In the discussion of commercial cellulose ethers, greater detail for individual cellulose ether compositions, including carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose and its mixed ethers, methylcellulose and its mixed ethers, ethylcellulose, hydroxyethylethylcellulose, and hydroxypropylcellulose is offered.
