Abstract

Chloroprene [126-99-8], 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene, is prepared from butadiene by chlorination followed by dehydrochlorination of the intermediate 3,4-dichloro-1-butene. It is used almost exclusively in the production of neoprene (CR, chloroprene rubber). Because of problems of stability toward polymerization and dimerization, it is usually manufactured only as needed for polymer manufacture.
