Abstract
This article discusses the various types of corrosion and the fundamental mechanisms responsible for corrosion. The importance of electrochemical reactions in causing and controlling corrosion phenomena is emphasized. The influence of environmental factors and metallurgical variables is reviewed and the predominant corrosion modes for technologically significant metal and alloy systems are discussed. The various methods of corrosion prevention such as cathodic protection, coatings, and inhibitors are also described. Throughout the article, references to additional information are included.
