Abstract

Electrodialysis, a process in which ions are moved across a membrane from one solution to another under the influence of an electric current, is primariy used in the production of potable and ultrapure water. This electroseparation process is also often employed in hybrid processes to remove electrolytic and other components from seawater, industrial effluents, or other water sources. Electrodialysis uses direct current, metal electrodes and highly ion-selective membranes. The membranes are composed of ion-exchange resin materials.
