Abstract

Many of the hazardous wastes that are generated by industrial, municipal, and governmental facilities are safely destroyed by incineration. This article provides a summary of the amount of hazardous waste generated, the amount destroyed by incineration, an overview of the incineration process, the types of incinerators, air pollution control devices and emissions, challenges in operation of incinerators, and regulations. The incinerators that are considered include rotary kilns, fluidized beds, moving and fixed grates (hearths), liquid waste incinerators, cement kilns, light aggregate kilns, and halogen acid production furnaces.
