Abstract
Industrial antimicrobial agents are chemicals used to prevent the adverse consequences of microbiological activity in processes and products. They are targeted against bacteria, mold, and fungi. Applications of industrial antimicrobial agents fall into two categories: process uses and preservation uses. They are found in swimming pool sanitizers, cooling water treatments, metalworking, petroleum recovery, pulp and paper processing, paint, caulks and adhesives, laundry sanitizers, textiles, plastics, and cosmetics. The key trend affecting this industry is the regulation of products and their uses by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These regulations have curtailed the introduction of new ingredients, selectively limited the markets for a number of products, and eliminated products by suspension or cancellation. This article lists and discusses materials used and their statuses, as well as formerly used agents and biocides under development.
