Abstract

Electrochemical systems convert chemical and electrical energy through charge-transfer reactions. These processes, which may be electrolytic or galvanic, are introduced. Basic definitions and terminology are given. The fundamental principles of thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport as applied to electrochemical systems, the relevance of these principles to the design of electrochemical systems are discussed.
