Abstract

The nuclear reactor involves a controlled chain reaction wherein fission of uranium by neutrons occurs. By-products are energy and wastes. A brief history of reactor development is given. Worldwide usage of nuclear reactors for power generation is summarized, including the numbers and types of reactors. Characteristics of the most common reactor types are given.

Environmental aspects of nuclear power plants are presented. Discussion of safety issues includes lessons learned from such previous accidents as those at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. The high cost of nuclear electricity is discussed and compared to use of coal.
