Abstract

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a subcategory of a versatile class of petroleum products known as natural gas liquids that are produced with and extracted from natural gas. Other natural gas liquids include natural gasoline and ethane. LPG is also produced from the refining of crude oil. It is commercially available as propane, butane, and butane–propane mixtures. Specifications of the commercial LPG products depend on composition and vary between wide limits.

The manufacture and processing of LPG is partially dependent on the desired by-product as well as the process economics. Purification procedures involve both amine and caustic treatments to remove sulfur as well as dehydration and fractionation. Shipment and storage require specialized equipment.

Principal uses of LPG include as a fuel and as a petrochemical feedstock.
