Abstract
The more widely used inorganic and organic mercury compounds are reviewed. Information as to methods of preparation, properties, and use of these compounds, as well as their current status with regard to U.S. Federal Government regulations, is given. Mercury compounds are used as preservatives and fungicides in coating compositions, as catalysts, as components in semiconductors, and as antiseptics.
The general toxicology of the various classes of mercury compounds is discussed. The methods of dealing with the safety hazards of producing and handling mercurials are also presented, as are the methods of removal of mercury from effluent liquids and gases.
