Abstract

The physical and chemical properties of methanol (methyl alcohol), CH3OH, are summarized. The evolution of the current low pressure technology based on synthesis gas is presented. The mechanism and functionality of the methanol synthesis catalyst are discussed. Synthesis gas generation processes and feedstocks are described in detail, as are various methanol reactor configurations. The status of current research for future methanol processes, including direct oxidation routes, is summarized. Health and safety aspects of methanol storage and handling are discussed. Economic data and end-use products are detailed.
