Abstract
Methyl chloride is the simplest chlorinated hydrocarbon and occurs naturally in significant quantities. At ordinary temperatures and pressures it is a colorless gas with a very mild odor and a sweet taste. The principal methods of industrial preparation are methanol hydrochlorination and methane chlorination. Its primary use is in the production of silicone rubbers and as a general methylating agent. A growth rate of 30% is expected for the year 2003. Methyl chloride is regulated by a number of federal and state laws.
