Abstract
Studies have provided extensive information about the nutritional requirements of dogs and cats. Commercial pet food is available in canned, semimoist, and dry forms; dry food may be either pelleted or extruded. Pet food formulations contain as many as 50 nutrient (amino acids, fats, fibers, etc) and nonnutrient (antioxidants, flavor enhancers, etc) additives. The Association of American Feed Control Officials has developed nutrient profiles for dog and cat foods. Labeling regulations as well as the safety of pet food is included.
