Abstract

Poly(fluorosilicones) are siloxane polymers with fluorinated organic substituents bonded to silicon. The combination of fluoro-organic and siloxane properties in one material has many unique applications. The monomer and polymer preparations are reviewed for the manufacture of poly(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)methylsiloxane and related poly(fluorosilicones). The polymers and their materials' application properties are discussed with a correlation to chemical structure and stability. The processing, compounding, and curing of the poly(fluorosilicones) into fluids, sealants, rubber, and related applications are described, along with information on safe handling characteristics. Specific examples of applications are covered. An estimation of global capacity is given along with a perspective on market aspects.
