Abstract

Roofs are a basic element of shelter. As larger and larger roofing structures are desired, building designs become an important element in construction. A modern design normally includes a structure to carry loads, insulation to control heat flow, a barrier to control air and vapor flow, and a roofing element to prevent water penetration. This article discusses all aspects of roofing materials, from manufacturing methods, roofing system performance, specifications and application rates, to economic as well as health, safety, and environmental factors.
