Sulfuric acid has been an important article of commerce for at least 250 years and is one of the largest volume basic chemicals in the world. This article discusses physical properties of sulfuric acid, oleum, and sulfur trioxide and includes 13 tables, 19 graphs, and extensive references. Both the single and double absorption contact processes for sulfuric acid manufacture are discussed, including materials of construction. Also discussed are significant advances in the process that increase energy recovery. Other information includes economics, health and toxicity, and applicable Federal regulations for shipping and handling.
