Abstract
Drawing from the research literature and from focus group discussions, interview data, and other artifacts, this scholarly article traces the emergence, evolution, and application of technology transfer in relation to research collaborations among business, university, and government partners. The report details how technology transfer can be used to invent, develop, and extract value from intellectual property; identifies common barriers to collaboration; and provides summary information about the legal conventions generally employed in contract negotiations. A compilation of best practices, explaining how universities and corporations can facilitate collaborative research, along with three exemplars, is included for technology transfer practitioners.
