This  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seds.org\/messier\/xtra\/ngc\/brocchi.html\">cosmic hang-up<\/a> has been debated over much of last century,  as astronomers wondered whether this binocular-visible object is  really a physically associated  <a href=\"http:\/\/antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/apod\/open_clusters.html\">open cluster<\/a> or a chance projection.  Chance star projections are known as  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asterism_%28astronomy%29\">asterisms<\/a>, an example of which is the popular  <a href=\"http:\/\/antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap070108.html\">Big Dipper<\/a>.    Recent precise measurements from <a href=\"http:\/\/instruct1.cit.cornell.edu\/courses\/astro101\/java\/parallax\/parallax.html\">different vantage points<\/a> in the Earth&#8217;s orbit around the Sun  have uncovered discrepant angular shifts indicating that the  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clothes_hanger\">Coat Hanger<\/a> is better described as an  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asterism_%28astronomy%29\">asterism<\/a>.  Known more formally as  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brocchi%27s_Cluster\">Collinder 399<\/a>,  this bright stellar grouping is wider than the  <a href=\"http:\/\/antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap040829.html\">full moon<\/a> and lies in the constellation of the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seds.org\/Maps\/Stars_en\/Fig\/vulpecula.html\">Fox<\/a> (Vulpecula).
